If you have a question that is not answered on this page, please feel free to contact us.
A coating of raw linseed oil at least once or twice a year should be sufficient to protect the pit. Applying the oil right after finishing a cook, when the smoker is still hot, is the best time since this allows the oil to actually soak in to the surface.
You can certainly get a cover if you'd like to, just be aware that the material for the cover should be at least somewhat breathable to allow moisture to escape. Temperature changes can cause the steel to sweat, and if there's nowhere for the condensation to go it will cause the steel to rust much more quickly.
No, the tires will not explode from the heat. Between the thickness of the steel and the partial insulation in the firebox, the tires don't get hot enough to cause any issues.
The answer to that question is entirely dependent upon the sizes of the pieces of meat you'll be cooking, which means it's not a question we can answer with any kind of certainty.
The short answer is - no. There are a few reasons why we don't, and those are:
- It could cause airflow issues impacting how the smoker draws since it's an additional hole in the firebox
- It would make for a much dirtier firebox since there would be drippings from whatever is being cooked, which could impact the smoke flavor for subsequent smoking sessions
- Most importantly, we are trying to make the best smoker, and smoking experience, that we can, not a unit that is an all-in-one
Yes, the pits hold steady temps very well in cold weather. Between the 3/8"-thick steel and the partially-insulated firebox, the only drop in temp you might get is when you're opening the firebox all the way to add wood.
The Freedom 94 is our smallest pit, and to-date we've only made one unit larger than a 120, which was a custom build for a current customer. We would like to be able to offer larger propane tank pits in the future, but the tanks are currently very difficult for us to source in our location.
Absolutely not. The pit is too large for most pickup beds and there is virtually no way to completely keep it from rocking back and forth in transit, potentially leading to a broken back window.
While this question has only been asked once or twice (and therefore not a "frequently asked question"), we feel it is important to state firmly and unequivocally that we will never compromise our values or integrity for the sake of making extra money on a pit. The ONLY time we will change the build order and work on a pit out of order is if a customer has specifically asked us to hold off on building their pit so completion will happen at a time that's more convenient for them.
